O Observatório do Turismo da cidade de São Luís está vinculado ao grupo de pesquisa "Turismo, Cidades e Patrimônio", da Universidade Federal do Maranhão (Ufma) que, juntamente com a Coordenação de Análise Mercadológica da Secretaria Municipal de Turismo (Setur), desenvolvem um trabalho integrado com o objetivo de ser um instrumento de planejamento e gestão, disponibilizando informações e dados sistematizados, que possam contribuir para o desenvolvimento turístico de São Luís, ao mesmo tempo canalizando discussões e meios de pesquisa para o trade, municípios, Instituições de Ensino e comunidade em geral.
As principais pesquisas realizadas pelo Observatório do Turismo e Análise Mercadológica são:
- Pesquisa de demanda turística (baixa estação e alta estação);
- Pesquisa de mercado (dimensionamento e caracterização da oferta);
- Pesquisa de reputação on-line;
- Pesquisas de posicionamento da imagem turística do município de São Luís no Brasil e Exterior;
- Pesquisas de opinião do trade local e nacional;
- Apoio a Estudos e Pesquisas Técnicas com produção de dossiê, publicações impressas e digitais, relatórios técnicos e suporte ao desenvolvimento de Inventário Turístico.

The São Luís Tourism Observatory is linked to the research group "Tourism, Cities and Heritage", of the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), which, together with the Marketing Analysis Coordination of the Secretaria Municipal de Turismo(SETUR), develop an integrated work with the objective of be an instrument of planning and management, providing information and systematized data, which can contribute to the tourist development of São Luís, at the same time channeling discussions and means of research for the trade, municipalities, Educational Institutions, and community in general.
The main surveys carried out by the Tourism and Market Analysis Observatory are:
- Research of tourist demand (low and high season);
- Market research (sizing and characterization of the offer);
- Online reputation research;
- Research on the positioning of the tourist image of the municipality of São Luís in Brazil and abroad;
- Opinion polls of local and national trade;
- Support for Technical Studies and Research with dossier production, printed and digital publications, technical reports, and support for the development of the Tourist Inventory.
